On the fringe of Horizon Festival, a groundswell of unconventional creativity has emerged - Horizon Underground in Nambour.

From August 25 to September 3, a 10-day program of experimental works, emerging artists and new experiences awaits.

Local artists and producers, with event partner the Old Ambulance Station, have come together to produce the Horizon Underground program that will challenge your perceptions and tempt you to step outside the norm.

From Diner en Noir, a Nambouresque gothic-themed twist on Paris’ famous Diner en Blanc and Dying to Know, an intergenerational collaboration exploring death and renewal through the eyes of student photographers, to a late night theatre program.

Horizon Underground includes a vast array of experiences including the launch of the Nambour audio trail, exhibitions, workshops and more.

Head down to C-Square on Saturday, August 26 from 10am – 4pm and check out the House of Sole dancers and the Sunshine Coast Ukulele Masters, enjoy a comedy show with Captain Australia, walk through a Wordscape, make magical musical instruments with Junktown and the kids will love to play in the Pom Pom Palace.

In the afternoon from 4.30pm, head over to Town Square for the Hey-Lowe Festival, Underground’s official opening.

The Square will come alive with food, fun, funky tunes and festivities, featuring The Outsiders, Doo Wop Dolls, Chris Flaskas Trio, GMU Dancers and Loud Weird Load.

Check out Patchwork Dreaming: Ensemble Mongrel on Saturday, September 2 in the Black Box Theatre at the Old Ambulance Station.

Composed for woodwind duo Alicia Crossley and Andrew Smith, this multimedia performance explores the complexities of cultural heritage and aboriginality in contemporary Australia.

The Black Parlour at the Black Box Theatre will rouse the night owls with an edgy late night theatre program.

Opening on Saturday, August 26 at 9pm with a Kabaret, no not Cabaret, this is the kind of evening that will leave you Wounded in all the right places (18+).

Exciting, empowering and raw, MANIA (18+) is an awe-inspiring show where glamour and grunge come together in a unique combination of circus talent, burlesque and contemporary culture – Sunday, August 27 and Sunday, 3 September 7.30pm. 

Plus, with a live performance of “devil’s music” blues and slide guitar in Back to the Crossroads, Tortured Remixes by Topology and the Nambour Variety Show, Black Parlour tickets will sell out fast, so book now.

During the day, the Black Box Theatre will give you the opportunity to be a part of the show.

Show us what you’ve got and join in Yesway theatre’s improvisation workshop on Saturday, August 26, then be a part of the performance where you will create scenes and characters based on audience suggestions.

Fancy a bit of drama? You could join in Spiral’s inclusive Drama and Dance workshops on Tuesday, August 29 and then stay on for a performance by the Spiral Dancers from 4-6pm.

During the day or late at night, be a part of the groundswell in Nambour, and go underground.
